Tokyo stocks rebounded Friday, lifted by a weaker yen after the Group of Seven industrialized nations agreed to conduct joint yen- selling intervention to help ease the impact of the quake-tsunami disaster on the Japanese economy.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 244.08 points, or 2.72 percent, from Thursday to 9,206.75.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on The Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 19.59 points, or 2.42 percent, to 830.39.
All 33 sectors on the TSE rose, with the mining sector leading gainers, followed by the nonferrous metals and securities sectors. The transport equipment sector had the least gains.
The U.S. dollar, which plunged to a postwar low of 76.25 yen the previous day, surged to trade in the upper 81 yen zone in Tokyo after the G-7 move, easing investor concern about the yen's strength hurting Japanese corporate performance, brokers said.
But investors refrained from buying further ahead of a three-day weekend and as they kept monitoring developments at the quake-hit nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture as the Self-Defense Forces and police scrambled to cool an overheated reactor by spraying it with water, they said.
